Measuring rope correctly
A custom-made product cannot be returned — so please provide the correct measurement.
Do your lines need replacing, or would you simply like new lines? Measure them correctly first. Passing on the right size is the first step towards a new, suitable line. We use the measurements below when making our ropes — so please pass them on accurately, since a custom-made product cannot be returned.
Not sure? Feel free to contact us — sending us a working drawing always helps too. Would you also like to have the rope inspected or spliced on site? Feel free to get in touch.
Eye length
The eye length is the distance from the start of the splice to the end of the eye. As standard, we make the eye 150 cm and always cover it with a standard protective sleeve.
Measuring diameter
Never measure a 12-strand polyester or polypropylene line with a calliper — you’ll also be measuring the air between the strands. If you order a 16 mm rope, a calliper will quickly measure it at 24 mm.
It’s best to tape the line as tightly as possible and measure it with a proper rope diameter gauge. The most accurate method, however, is to check the invoice from the last line you ordered.
Loop & soft shackle
A loop or soft shackle is measured on the inside and at its full stretched length. Always state the load the loop or soft shackle needs to handle. We test the breaking strength of a soft shackle at 10% below the breaking strength of the rope — this is what we use as the maximum working load.
